Keeping children safe

Every child has the right to feel safe, respected and listened to. Blooming Minds Learning is committed to the safety and wellbeing of every child we teach, and we have zero tolerance for child abuse.

We follow the Victorian Child Safe Standards. This page explains what that means in practice and what to do if you're ever worried.

Our commitment

  • We put children's safety first in every decision, from who we hire to how lessons run.
  • We respect every child and family, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, children from all cultures and backgrounds, children with disability and LGBTIQA+ children and families.
  • We listen to children. We encourage them to tell a trusted adult if anything makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable, and we take every concern seriously.
  • We involve families. You always know who is teaching your child, what was covered and how to reach us.

Who teaches your child

  • Our tutors are teachers. Most are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), which includes criminal history checks, and have notified Working with Children Check Victoria of their tutoring work. Graduate and final-year teaching students must hold a current Working with Children Check before they work with any child. We don't employ tutors who aren't teachers or teaching students.
  • We check qualifications and references, and keep a record of every tutor's registration and checks, with expiry dates.
  • Every tutor agrees to our code of conduct and our child safety and wellbeing policy before they start, and is reminded of them regularly.

How lessons are kept safe

  • A parent or guardian is home for the whole of every in-home lesson. Library lessons happen in an open, public area.
  • Lessons take place in an open, shared space, never behind a closed door.
  • Tutors never drive or transport children, never photograph or film them, and never give gifts or arrange to see them outside lessons.
  • All contact goes through Blooming Minds (our office, email and family portal), never a tutor's personal phone, messaging apps or social media.
  • Our family portal and kids zone are private. Children use a first name and a cartoon character, never a photo, and there is no chat, no advertising and no contact with other users.

If you're worried about a child

If a child is in immediate danger, call 000.

To report a concern about a child's safety to Victorian Child Protection, call 1300 655 795 (Frankston, Mornington Peninsula, Dandenong and Casey, business hours) or the after-hours Child Protection Emergency Service on 13 12 78.

Children and young people can talk to Kids Helpline any time on 1800 55 1800.

If you have any concern about a tutor's behaviour, or about anything that happened during a lesson, please contact Anna, our Director, straight away on 0400 327 299 or [email protected]. You don't need proof, and you can raise a concern in confidence.

What we do when a concern is raised

  1. We make sure the child is safe and, where needed, stop the tutor working with children while we look into it.
  2. We report to Victoria Police, Child Protection, the Victorian Institute of Teaching or other authorities whenever the law requires it, or whenever we believe a child may be at risk. Our tutors follow Victoria's mandatory reporting laws, and every adult at Blooming Minds understands their duty to report.
  3. We keep you informed, keep accurate records and protect everyone's privacy as far as we can.
  4. We review what happened and improve how we work.

Complaints and feedback

You can raise any complaint or concern, big or small, with Anna by phone, email or through the family portal. We'll acknowledge it within two business days and tell you what we'll do. If you're not satisfied with our response about a child safety matter, you can contact the Victorian child safe regulator.

Our policies

Our child safety and wellbeing policy and our tutor code of conduct are available to any family on request. Email [email protected] and we'll send them to you. We review them every year.
