Reading and phonics tutoring for primary school children

Reading opens the door to every other subject. When it feels hard, children can start to avoid books altogether. Our teachers find exactly where your child is up to and build from there, step by step, so reading starts to feel possible again, and then enjoyable.

Signs your child could use some support

  • Guessing words from the first letter or the pictures
  • Finding it hard to blend sounds together
  • Reading slowly, or losing track of the story
  • Avoiding readers and library books
  • Reading the words well but not understanding what they've read

How lessons work

Every lesson is 60 minutes, one-on-one, with a registered teacher in your home or at your local library. In the first lesson your teacher gets to know your child and finds exactly where they're up to. From there, each lesson builds on the last.

After every lesson you get a short written summary, so you always know what was covered and how to help at home.

What we cover in reading & phonics

Phonics and sounds

Letter-sound knowledge, blending and segmenting, digraphs and trickier spelling patterns, taught in a clear, systematic order.

Sight words and fluency

High-frequency words and repeated reading so children read smoothly, with expression.

Comprehension

Predicting, questioning, retelling and inferring, so children understand and enjoy what they read.

Love of reading

Books chosen around your child's interests, because a child who wants to read will read more.

Progress you can see

A summary after every lesson, and your schedule, summaries and invoices together in the family portal.

Lessons are taught by registered teachers across the Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne's South East.

Reading & phonics tutoring questions

Is phonics still taught in Victorian schools?

Yes. Victorian schools teach systematic synthetic phonics in the early years. Our teachers use the same approach, so lessons support what your child is learning at school.

My child is in Year 4 and still finds reading hard. Is it too late?

Not at all. Older children often have small gaps in their phonics that make reading harder than it needs to be. We find those gaps and fill them, using books that suit their age and interests.

Do you work with children who have dyslexia?

Our teachers support children with a range of learning needs, including dyslexia. Tell us about your child when you get in touch and we'll talk through how we can help.
